I trained in Art in the UK where I was born, and I’ve loved living in Victoria since 2013. I’ve practised art for a few decades, always gravitating towards depicting local flora and fauna, and the landscapes of where I am living, although I also love to draw people. I love to explore and I always find interest in the microcosms of nature and macrocosms of cultures. I’ve exhibited in the UK, America, and Australia and my artworks are owned around the world.
Since moving to the Castlemaine locality in country Victoria, I’ve been inspired to return to a medium I first used on my art degree: printmaking by hand, using lino and woodcut, mainly on paper and occasionally on textiles.
The trajectory of my individual style has been to consistently simplify form and colour; I still find it exhilarating that a single line can portray a three dimensional form convincingly, to a human eye. Printmaking takes this a step further: forms become clear and dramatic simply because they are physically chiselled out of a hard material, before being inked up and transferred to paper; and the initial drawings need to be clear enough to suit this process.
Since I have practised watercolour painting for a long time, first learning the traditional techniques at a liberal arts college in rural Illinois (USA) prior to my art degree, and embracing it fully when my children were young and I needed to work in our domestic environment, to colour drawings quickly and non-toxically - it is natural for me to colour the monochrome prints in the same way. I can create additional depth and texture with this beautiful medium, or fill broad areas with flat colour if that suits the image better.
I am incredibly grateful to live and work on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, the ancient and unceded lands of the Djaara people. I offer my deep respect to their Elders past and present, and I acknowledge their enduring, sacred connection to this land, its waters, and its wildlife.
I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy the natural environment that inspires it.
Hi!
Shortform Version:
I am a British-born artist who has called Victoria home since 2013, bringing several decades of art practice to my work. My pieces have been exhibited across the UK, USA, and Australia, and are held in collections worldwide. I am endlessly fascinated by the intricate details of nature and the broad patterns of culture, constantly gravitating toward local flora, fauna, landscapes, and people.
My Process: Print & Colour
Based in Castlemaine, regional Victoria, I specialise in hand-carved printmaking—a medium I first experienced during my art degree. Working with lino and woodcut blocks, I transfer distilled, simplified designs onto paper and textiles.
To bring flat colour, rich texture, and unique depth to every finished piece, I hand-colour my monochrome prints using watercolours, drawing on traditional techniques I learned while studying in Illinois.
Acknowledgement of Country
I create my art on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, and I am deeply grateful to live and work on these ancient, unceded lands of the Djaara people. I pay my heartfelt respects to their Elders past and present, acknowledging their enduring custodianship and sacred connection to the land, waters, and wildlife.
I hope these artworks bring you as much joy as the ancient landscape that inspires them.
